I can only think of one way to describe playing and learning bass: stupidly fun. There's a few things that make bass lessons so fun. For one, unlike the six stringed acoustic or electric guitar, bass is typically played using lines of notes rather than chords. This makes for a much faster rate of learning, as you don't have to strain your hands, contorting them into unnatural-feeling chord shapes.
Though it's pretty easy to pick up a bass and start pounding out songs, it takes years and proper instruction to become a master bassist. Taking lessons also reduces your risk of wrist injury and teaches you proper technique for ease of playing and maximum achievement.
